Cisco Waits For World To Catch Up To Its Strategy

Cisco, responded as many did at the time: it tried hard to convince everyone that it totally was a software company because that's what investors and VCs were pressuring everyone to be. Software margins were very attractive, and no one wanted to be in the uncool business of something as prosaic as hardware. So Cisco, like many other companies, duly trotted out messaging designed to respond to this fashion trend while not really delivering very much in the way of actual product or business changes.

And then fashions changed.

The world decided that, actually, no, putting everything in one cloud isn't what we want, we want lots of clouds, and also datacenters aren't going away after all, oh and colo facilities are still useful and also stuff out at the edge is going to stay there and in fact grow quite a lot.

Happily for Cisco, all it needed to do was to change the way it talked about what it was already doing, and voilĂ !, Cisco had clearly planned it all along.

"Edge is where we've always been strong," said Miyuki Suzuki, President for Cisco Asia Pacific, Japan and Greater China (APJC), "We want lots of edge." Of course Cisco does, because lots of devices need lots of networking and that sells lots of software, hardware, financing arrangements, you name it.

Congress Approves Funding For UNICEF To Protect Children Worldwide
The tech industry has an unfortunate preoccupation with the new and shiny and its infatuation with software put Cisco in a difficult position. "We're unique," Suzuki said, "Because we're never going to give up on hardware. We're never going to be one or the other." Five years ago this statement would have been decried as Cisco being outdated and out of touch with the Way Things Are Done Now. Today it's a fairly innocuous statement that accurately reflects what Cisco does. Software needs to run on hardware, and certain software workloads benefit from specialized hardware. That's why clouds, for all they bang on about being about software, have been loading up their virtual machines with GPU cards to do machine learning.

Hardware matters. And yes, so does software, because that's what runs on the hardware, so having a bit of both is actually quite handy. Modern hardware is actually full of software anyway, it's just embedded into the chips where you can't readily see it so everyone sort of pretends it doesn't exist most of the time.

"It's not like we've never had software capability," Suzuki adds, "It's more the business model is becoming more software-like." Mostly this is about financing rather than functionality. "Increasingly we're finding customers want things on a recurring subscription model and also as-a-Service so that they don't actually have to manage the asset," Suzuki said. Customers will still have the same physical devices and software from Cisco as they would have if they'd purchased it outright, they just lease it instead.

And there's nothing wrong with that.

Cisco is fairly well positioned for an explosion in edge computing devices that need networks made of hardware and software to tie them into the rest of the global computing environment. Whether this is due to luck or good management is an open question. History teaches us that luck is probably a larger component than we feel comfortable acknowledging. Still, Cisco has accumulated plenty of expertise in a variety of product areas that are important in the multi-cloud/hybrid/edge computing world we find ourselves in. The vast amount of networking required to connect all this distributed computing stuff together represents a massive opportunity for a company that certainly knows plenty about networking.

Cisco has also been steadily adding standardized APIs to its products so that developers (and network admins) can learn how to program them and manage them using more modern, automated approaches. Certainly this could have been done faster, but it seems that networking folk are somewhat slower to adopt new ways of working than other parts of the stack, which surprises me but appears to be true nonetheless.

Still, I can see enterprises using these interfaces in combination with tools like ServiceNow to add more self-service and automation in their business processes now that automation has become sufficiently fashionable. The prospect of networking infrastructure that is programmable without having to purchase additional vendorware is attractive, particularly if the vendor's tools don't work the way your business needs them to. If being API programmable is a Cisco competitor's chief advantage, that advantage will be gone shortly, or at least severely blunted.

Cisco has been quite lucky that the majority of IT customers moved about as quickly as Cisco did in swapping everything to the cloud.

The challenge now for Cisco is to capitalize on this lucky break. Most organizations don't even get one of these, let alone two, so to squander the golden opportunity before it would be a tremendous waste.

Cisco warns a critical patch is needed for a remote access firewall, VPN and router

Cisco is warning organizations with remote users that have deployed a particular Cisco wireless firewall, VPN and router to patch a critical vulnerability in each that could let attackers break into the network.

The vulnerability, which has an impact rating of 9.8 out of 10 on the Common Vulnerability Scoring System lets a potential attacker send malicious HTTP requests to a targeted device. A successful exploit could let the attacker execute arbitrary code on the underlying operating system of the affected device as a high-privilege user, Cisco stated.

The vulnerability is in the web-based management interface of three products: Cisco’s RV110W Wireless-N VPN Firewall, RV130W Wireless-N Multifunction VPN Router and RV215W Wireless-N VPN Router. All three products are positioned as remote-access communications and security devices.

The web-based management interface of these devices is available through a local LAN connection or the remote-management feature and by default, the remote management feature is disabled for these devices, Cisco said in its Security Advisory.

It said administrators can determine whether the remote-management feature is enabled for a device, by opening the web-based management interface and choose “Basic Settings > Remote Management.” If the “Enable” box is checked, remote management is enabled for the device.

The vulnerability is due to improper validation of user-supplied data in the web-based management interface, Cisco said.

Cisco has released software updates that address this vulnerability and customers should check their software license agreement for more details.

Cisco Tops in Enterprise Overall Satisfaction

As discussed in my two previous posts here and here, more than 3,000 IT managers evaluated their PBX providers for the Eastern Management Group’s 2018 customer satisfaction study. Out of 10 Customer Satisfaction Measurements researched, I’m going to focus here only on one vendor -- Cisco -- and just one measurement -- Overall Satisfaction – for mid-market and large enterprises.

This follows on a look at Overall Satisfaction across all customer segments -- SMB and enterprise -- and all world regions, as well as a general discussion of customer satisfaction ratings in the mid-market and large enterprise. As the reader might recall from the first post, IT managers chose Vertical Communications, RingCentral, and Xorcom as best in Overall Satisfaction, one of the numerous research categories. And, as noted in the second post, Mitel scores well in the mid-market and enterprise. It swept first place in quite a few Customer Satisfaction Measurement categories evaluated by large businesses.

Besides Mitel, Cisco and NEC are other mid-market and enterprise leaders taking top spots in Customer Satisfaction Measurements. These three companies, along with Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise, Avaya, and Unify, are the six companies most frequently reviewed by large customer IT managers when choosing a new PBX.

As for the Cisco achievement, Overall Satisfaction is a capstone evaluation. To IT managers, it is a comprehensive assessment of how their PBX providers have performed in three provider categories:

  1. Product (three Customer Satisfaction Measurements)
  2. Vendor Experience (four Customer Satisfaction Measurements)
  3. Customer Delight (three Customer Satisfaction Measurements)

Cisco is number one in 2018 Enterprise Overall Satisfaction, which is the holistic vendor experience.

Obviously to be the Overall Satisfaction leader you first need a good product. That’s equipment, software, and service contracts, all areas in which Cisco does well according to the company’s customers in our survey. Second, the Overall Satisfaction leader must provide exceptional customer support. Support is the cradle-to-grave relationship where providers must perform handstands each day, and again Cisco customers applaud these capabilities.

How complicated can it be to provide life cycle support? Every customer would like its provider to be the single point of contact for all matters. But enterprises routinely have worldwide operations; customers’ operations are scattered here and there. IT managers expect spare parts to be kept locally. Trucks and certified technicians have to be positioned within one-hour drive time of the customer. As a result, global support -- even from Cisco -- must be available from channel partners. Enterprise customers seem to endorse Cisco’s worldwide distribution of channel partner responsibilities.

Eastern Management Group’s research has found Cisco having the world’s most formidable channel partner program. The company has some of the largest and best-trained dealers in the world. Collectively its presence is ubiquitous. Some examples of Cisco dealers are AT&T, Bell Canada, BT, Computacenter, Dimension Data, ECCOM, Embratel, IBM, Logicalis, Presidio, Romtelecom, Tech Data, Verizon, West, and WWT. These are just a few of Cisco’s thousands of worldwide partners.

Cisco prepares its partners well to serve the enterprise customer. Eastern Management Group has evaluated many partner programs, and in our opinion, Cisco offers one of the best.

Not surprisingly Cisco spends oodles of dollars on partner training. How much? Eastern Management Group research shows that it can cost millions of dollars to develop one good partner training program -- say for a product such as a virtualized server, or a vertical market such as healthcare sales and support. Cisco operates in rarefied air being able to spend like this. It does so that partners aren’t only certified but are experts. And our interviews with Cisco partners shows support from the mothership is at the ready. For enterprise PBX and cloud sales, the partner can sell and fulfill (implement). If necessary, Cisco will sell, and the partner can take over. Whatever it takes wherever it is, Cisco works to be the leader in enterprise overall satisfaction.

In a future post, we’ll report on NEC, another mid-market and enterprise PBX customer satisfaction winner. Mid-market and enterprise customers in Eastern Management Group’s 2018 customer satisfaction study say NEC is the winner in our Customer Satisfaction Measurement for Reliability. Reliability is a critical measure, especially for government and healthcare PBXs, two of NEC’s most significant target vertical markets.

There are various types of investment philosophies that investors may choose to follow when approaching the stock market. Value investing involves searching for undervalued or bargain stocks that may eventually offer solid returns. Growth investors often buy companies that have highly promising growth potential. Some investors will choose to invest with a contrarian approach. This entails making investment decisions that are opposite of what the majority are doing, such as buying when everyone else is selling and vice-versa. Socially responsible investors may be searching for companies that subscribe to a high level of ethical or moral standards.

Taking a look at some historical highs and lows for Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:CSCO), we see that the all time high is currently 82, and the all time low is 0.06857707. Investors often pay added attention to a stock when it is nearing a historical high point or low point. For the last year, the high price is 49.47, and the low price stands at 38.23. For the last six months, the high was seen at 49.47, and the low was tracked at 40.25. If we move in closer, the three month high/low is 49.1388/40.25, and the one month high/low is 47.71/42.885.

Traders following the stock may be watching SMA or Simple Moving Average Levels. Many traders will be watching out for when the shorter-term averages cross above the longer-term averages as this may point to the start of an uptrend. Let’s look at the following SMA readings:

SMA 50 day: 45.3946
SMA 30 day: 46.528046
SMA 200 day: 45.791775
SMA 20 day: 47.032375
SMA 100 day: 45.155216
SMA 10 day47.21119

Traders following the Chaikin Money Flow indicator will note that the current 20 day reading is 0.33872917. The CMF value will fluctuate between 1 and -1. In general, a value closer to 1 would indicate higher buying pressure. A value closer to -1 would represent higher selling pressure.

Technical analysis on the stock may include following the Keltner Channels indicator. Currently, the 20 day upper band is 47.331264. The 20 day lower band is noted at 46.392742. The KC indicator is considered a lagging indicator. Traders may use the values to help spot overbought and oversold conditions.

Traders have the ability to use a wide range of indicators when studying stocks. Each trader will typically find a few indicators that they heavily rely on. The Ichimoku Cloud indicator works to identify trend direction, gauge momentum, and identify trading opportunities based on crossovers. We can view some Ichimoku indicator levels below:

Ichimoku Lead 1: 44.2725
Ichimoku Lead 2: 43.3125
Ichimoku Cloud Base Line: 46.47
Ichimoku Cloud Conversion Line: 47.005

When it comes to investing, overconfidence can be detrimental to securing profits in the stock market. When investors have some early short-term wins, this may lead them to believe that it is their skill and superior knowledge that produced the winners. All though this may occasionally be the case, investors may quickly realize that it is very hard to consistently produce winning results. Sometimes a few wins can lead the investor to believe that they can make any trade work. This may create a situation where the individual gets in much deeper than they should have. Conducting the proper stock research before any trade can help the investor make sure that they are getting into a position for the right reasons.

Question No : 5

What Netflow component can be applied to an interface to track IPv4 traffic?

A. flow monitor
B. flow record
C. flow sampler
D. flow exporter

Answer: A
Explanation:
Flow monitors are the Flexible NetFlow component that is applied to interfaces to perform network traffic monitoring. Flow monitors consist of a record and a cache. You add the record to the flow monitor after you create the flow monitor. The flow monitor cache is automatically created at the time the flow monitor is applied to the first interface. Flow data is collected from the network traffic during the monitoring process based on the key and nonkey fields in the record, which is configured for the flow monitor and stored in the flow monitor cache.
For example, the following example creates a flow monitor named FLOW-MONITOR-1 and enters Flexible NetFlow flow monitor configuration mode:
Router(config)# flow monitor FLOW-MONITOR-1
Router(config-flow-monitor)#

Question No : 9

Which option is the default switch port port-security violation mode?

A. shutdown
B. protect
C. shutdown vlan
D. restrict

Answer: A
Explanation:
Shutdown—This mode is the default violation mode; when in this mode, the switch will automatically force the switchport into an error disabled (err-disable) state when a violation occurs. While in this state, the switchport forwards no traffic. The switchport can be brought out of this error disabled state by issuing the errdisable recovery cause CLI command or by disabling and reenabling the switchport. Shutdown VLAN—This mode mimics the behavior of the shutdown mode but limits the error disabled state the specific violating VLAN.
